Kaori Furuhashi Solo Exhibition ”On a Boat”
2023.10.28 – 2023.11.19
ARTDYNE is pleased to present On a Boat, a solo exhibition by Kaori Furuhashi from 28 Oct (Sat) – 19 Nov (Sun), 2023.
Furuhashi was born in Tokyo in 1982 and completed her Master’s degree in Fine Arts at the University of Tsukuba in 2007. Taking familiar views of hills, water, light and nets as her starting point, she creates paintings in which thin blotches of paint coexist with thick, tactile layers of paint. In recent years, alongside her work, she has been researching painting materials related to transparency/translucency, and incorporating this into her artworks. This exhibition will feature more than ten new works for sale. Please take this opportunity to visit the exhibition.
Artist Statement.
Sometimes when I am washing something with water or hot water, I suddenly have a thought. I ruminate on it until I can stop my hand and say, “This is important”, but when it comes time to write it down, it is somehow different and I wonder if it was something like this. The sound of water, the contact with water, seems to free my thoughts, but it doesn’t allow me to memorise them.
In Greek mythology, there is a river called Lethe whose waters, when drunk, make you forget everything. The reason why I have repeatedly borrowed the shape of the water’s edge or surface is largely due to my interest in the boundary where the real image and the imaginary image intersect, but I think it is also related to my experience of arriving at the end of each painting after slightly forgetting how to do it. The finished picture is like a mass of oblivion, and the memory of the path hidden under the surface fades away. One blessing of forgetting may be the possibility of experiencing another route in a fresh way with the next painting.
