コバヤシ麻衣子個展「Inside The Window」

〈 Not Bad 〉2024, 60.6×41cm, Acrylic, color pencil, Japanese paper on canvas

Inside The Window

The countless windows I could see from the train window were just scenery.

One day, after I realized that someone’s life was inside those windows, I began to see them as a mass of life forms. And I am part of it.

I ponder about the inside of the square window frames.

ARTDYNE is pleased to announce “Inside The Window,” a solo exhibition by Maiko Kobayashi from July 5 (Fri.) to July 28 (Sun.), 2024. In addition, ARTDYNE will hold a talk event on July 20 to celebrate the publication of her first book “FORMS OF BEING”, which will be published in early July.

About the artist and her works

Maiko Kobayashi was born in Yokohama in 1977 and graduated from Musashino Art University Junior College of Art and Design with a major in spatial design. She later studied life drawing and sketching at Setsu Mode Seminar, and in 2008 completed a master’s degree in Art Practice Course, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Northumbria University, UK. Currently based in Tokyo, she is actively showing her work at galleries and art fairs in Japan and abroad in Europe, Asia, and Japan.

Maiko Kobayashi is an artist known for her works that deeply appeal to viewers through the medium of nameless “ikimono”, which is her unique character, and has a large fan base both in Japan and abroad. The mysterious creatures, which have both a lovely appearance and a melancholy expression, are painstakingly drawn with acrylics and other paints on a canvas covered with torn Japanese paper as a support. The works evoke a strong sense of psychological empathy that accompanies, accepts, and embraces the viewer’s feelings. We are always surprised by the power of Kobayashi’s works to reach the latent depths of the viewer’s psyche (deep sadness, loneliness, and quiet anger), which is even deeper than sentimentalism.

This exhibition will consist of nine works, most of which are new pieces. An opening reception will be held on the first day of the exhibition, Friday, July 5, at 5:00 p.m. We hope you will take this opportunity to visit the exhibition and appreciate the world spun out by Maiko Kobayashi.

Maiko Kobayashi’s first book “FORMS OF BEING” will be on sale from Friday, July 5,

This art book is available at the venue and in the ARTDYNE online store.
